A car chase involving multiple Austin police cars ended in a crash, killing one person last Friday. The crash happened in North Austin at around 2 p.m. near the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Rundburg Lane. Police say it began when a police officer witnessed a narcotics deal at the Super 8 Motel located at I-35 and Powell Lane on the southbound frontage road. The male suspect, identified as 44-year-old Paul Thomas Ray, then got into his silver Jeep SUV alone and left the scene. That's when an officer in a marked unit began his pursuit. Police say the officer lost contact with the suspect on Georgian Drive as he sped away. Shortly thereafter, Ray's vehicle collided with a Capital Metro bus head-on when he veered into the opposite lane while driving at a high rate of speed. He died at the scene of the crash. The bus had 15 occupants, with the bus driver receiving the most severe injury. She was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge with injuries to her legs. Two children that were on the bus were transported to Dell Children's Hospital with unknown injuries. The other twelve bus riders were transported to Brackenridge with minor injuries. This was Austin's 7th traffic fatality of 2011
